A sports centre and athletics stadium on Calderwood Road, a half-mile (1 km) northeast of East Kilbride town centre, the John Wright Sports Centre opened in 1972. The centre includes two large sports halls that are used for a variety of sports and recreational activities, together with a large modern gym, a youth gym and squash court. The main hall extends to 1184 sq. m (12,744 sq. feet) and can be divided into two providing space for a range of indoor sports such as badminton, basketball, five-a-side football, hockey, table tennis, tennis and volleyball, together with indoor cricket training. The second hall has an area of 290 sq. m (3121 sq. feet) and is mainly used for an extensive programme of fitness classes as well as judo, karate and trampolining clubs.
An athletics stadium (East Kilbride Stadium) was added in 1989 and opened by middle-distance runner Sir Steve Ovett. It comprises a 400m all-weather flood-lit track, with eight-lane home straight, surrounding an 11-a-side Grade 'A' grass football pitch. The track can be configured for hurdles and other athletic events are catered for, including long, triple and high jump, pole vault, discus and javelin.
