Coire a' Cheud-chnoic

A corrie in the Torridon district of Wester Ross, Coire a' Cheud-chnoic (meaning 'Valley of a Hundred Hills') falls into Glen Torridon from the south. The 10,000-year-old hummock moraines here are arguably the finest example of their type in the United Kingdom. Dating from the time when ice-sheets re-established themselves in the West of Scotland, these features provide important evidence for the processes of glacier activity. The area is regarded as being of outstanding importance by geomorphologists, yet is very accessible, lying just a half-mile south of the A896 road. It was first described by Sir Archibald Geikie in 1863 and further investigated by Peach and Horne in 1913.
