Glensanda Castle

(Caisteal Na Gruagaich, Castle Mearnaig)

A small and isolated tower, Glensanda Castle is prominently located on a grassy mound at the mouth of Glen Sanda on the northwestern shore of Loch Linnhe in the Kingairloch district of Highland Council Area. Also know as Caisteal Na Gruagaich or Castle Mearnaig, its situation is remote, 9 miles (14 km) east of Lochaline and 4 miles (6.5 km) from the nearest road. Dating from the late 15th century, this simple granite keep comprises two storeys and the walls remain relatively complete, although it has lost its garret and roof. The stair rises within the wall from an unvaulted cellar to the hall above.

The land here belonged to the MacMasters, but it was acquired by the Macleans of Kingairloch who built the castle and made their home here until c.1780 when they removed to the more commodious surroundings of what is now Kingairloch House. They sold the estate c.1800 and emigrated to Canada.

The castle now lies close to the Glensanda super-quarry.
