Cairngorm Reindeer Centre
(Reindeer House)

A visitor attraction which provides access to the Cairngorm reindeer herd, the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (also known as Reindeer House) is located between Loch Morlich and Glenmore Lodge, 5½ miles (9 km) east southeast of Aviemore. Reindeer were re-introduced into Scotland in 1952 by a Swedish Reindeer Herder, Mikel Utsi, initially fenced into a restricted area. Having demonstrated that the animals did no damage to forestry, they were permitted to graze freely over much of the Glenmore Forest Park by the mid 1950s. The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre opened in 1989 and now provides an information centre as well as taking visitors to meet the reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) in their natural environment.
