Kyle of Lochalsh Railway Station

(Caol Loch Aillse)

The terminus of the western extension of the Highland Railway, Kyle of Lochalsh (Gael: Caol Loch Aillse) is a large and picturesque station which is located on sizeable pier, facing into Kyle Akin, where once the ferry to Skye docked. The wooden station building was the work of Murdoch Paterson (1826-98), Chief Engineer to the Highland Railway Company, and opened in 1897. It is preceded by Duirinish Railway Station, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the north northeast. Operated by ScotRail, Kyle of Lochalsh is staffed part-time and is used by 60,164 passengers per annum (2009-10).

The white-harled Lochalsh Hotel located nearby is the former station hotel, built in the early 20th century and much-altered. This was operated by the state-owned British Transport Hotels group following the nationalisation of the railways in 1948, but sold off in 1982 and is now privately-owned.
