Allasdale Bay

A sandy bay on the west coast of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, which is unnamed on the Ordnance Survey map, Allasdale Bay lies between Aird Allasdale (Aird Allathasdail) and Greian Head, 1¼ miles (2 km) north of Borve. Extensive sand dunes and associated machair lie to the east and it was here than human burials were discovered after a storm in 2005. Historic Scotland funded an emergency excavation and the remains of thirteen individuals were discovered in Bronze-Age graves. Channel 4 television's Time Team were called in to investigate further and they exposed three further cist burials, the well-preserved skeleton of a middle-aged woman together with a pair of two Iron-Age roundhouses and a rare Iron-Age wheel-house.
