Craigour

(Craigo'er)

A small district of S Edinburgh, Craigour (originally Craigo'er) is located on the Burdiehouse Burn, next to the rather larger district of Moredun, 3 miles (5 km) southeast of the city centre. Craigour lies alongside the Old Dalkeith Road (A7) opposite Little France and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and developed from a farm-stead that was recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1855 as Craigo'er. It now represents a mixture of private housing (to the northwest) and public housing (to the southeast) with limited facilities (a public house, shop and bookmaker). The area is dominated by the four sixteen-storey tower blocks of Moredun which lie immediately to the southwest. Craigour Park Primary School opened in 2003 a quarter-mile (0.4 km) to the south on Moredun Park Road.

The original farmstead reamins, now converted to domestic use. The former farmhouse has been extended to form Ciaran's House, which provides families with accommodation when their child is going through cancer treatment at the nearby Royal Hospital for Children and Young People.
