Helliar Holm Lighthouse
(Shapinsay Lighthouse)

A picturesque stumpy little lighthouse situated on low cliffs overlooking the The String and Shapinsay Sound from Saeva Ness, the most southerly point of the little island of Helliar Holm, which lies to the south of the larger island of Shapinsay in Orkney. Helliar Holm Lighthouse (sometimes referred to as Shapinsay Lighthouse) comprises a white-painted tower which rises to 12.8m (42 feet), with adjacent two-storey keepers' cottages, and was first illuminated in 1893. It was the work of brothers David A. Stevenson (1854 - 1938) and Charles Stevenson (1855 - 1950) of the famous lighthouse-building dynasty. The light is visible for 15 nautical miles (27 km).

Operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board, it was automated in 1967.
