A utilitarian square lighthouse above Scarf Skerry, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) north of Hoxa Head and 2½ miles (4 km) west of St Margaret's Hope. The original Hoxa Head Lighthouse comprised a modest cast-iron tower built in 1901 by the brothers Charles Stevenson (1855 - 1950) and David A. Stevenson (1854 - 1938). This was crowned by an automatic gas-powered light. In 1996, it was replaced by the current structure, which consists of a metal frame, 7m (23 feet) in height, covered with white glass-fibre reinforced plastic. The old tower was dismantled and transferred to the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Aberdeenshire. Hoxa Head Lighthouse is operated remotely from the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters, based in Edinburgh.
