Kirkibost Island

(Eilean Chircebost, Eilean Chirceboist)

A small uninhabited island of the Outer Hebrides, Kirkibost Island (Gael: Eilean Chircebost or Chirceboist) lies off the west coast of North Uist, to the north of Baleshare. It is 1½ miles (2.5 km) in length but little more than a third-of-a-mile (0.5 km) wide. Low-lying, the island reaches little more than 10m (32 feet) in height in the north and has sand dunes to the south. It looks out onto the Monach Islands. Several smaller islands lie on its leeward-side and at low tide, when the sandbanks are exposed, Kirkibost Island extends almost to the shore.
