Dun a h-Uamha


(Dùn a h-Uamha)

A small oval fortification situated on a small plateau between Gleann Osamail and Gleann na h-Uamha in the centre of the Rhinns of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Dun a h-Uamha (meaning 'fort of the cave' in Gaelic) is located 1¼ miles (2 km) west of Conisby and 1½ miles (2.5 km) west northwest of Bruichladdich. The ancient fort occupies a steep rocky knoll and extends to 12.5m by 9m (41 feet by 30 feet) within a single stone wall which reaches 3m (10 feet) in thickness and 2.4m (8 feet) in height. The position of the entrance is not clear.
