(Baile Sear)

Baleshare (Gael: Baile Sear, or 'east village') is a low-lying island to the west of North Uist in the Western Isles. Extending to 850 ha (2100 acres), during low tides the island is surrounded by sand and connected to North Uist. A 350m (383 yard) causeway was built in 1962 to provide a permanent connection. There are two settlements on the island, Samhla on the east and Teanamachar to the west. The population is recorded as 59 (1961), 64 (1971), 67 (1981), 55 (1991), 49 (2001) and 58 (2011). To the north lies Kirkibost Island.
