A distinctive cone at a height of 219m / 718 feet, situated at the end of a low ridge in Annandale, Dumfries and Galloway, Hutton Mote is a defensive structure probably dating from the 12th C. It is 30m (98 feet) in diameter and 7m (23 feet) in height, and surrounded by a ditch up to 2.1m (7 feet) in depth. There was probably a timber-built bailey adjacent, which would have enclosed a settlement. The site is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
