Carlingwark Loch, Castle Douglas

A shallow loch in Dumfries and Galloway, Carlingwark Loch lies just south of Castle Douglas. Iron-Age crannogs or lake dwellings have been discovered in the loch. In the 18th and 19th it was a source of marl used to increase the fertility of farmland. The loch is connected to the River Dee by the Carlingwark Lane Canal. Today, it is popular for boating, fishing and bird-watching. Noted for its wintering waterfowl, particularly Goldeneye, Pochard, Tufted Duck and Wigeon, the loch forms part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated in 1960.
