Loch Whinyeon

A loch and small reservoir on the edge of the Glengap Forest, Dumfries and Galloway, Loch Whinyeon lies 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Gatehouse of Fleet in the shadow of Bengray. Impounded by an earth embankment dam on its eastern side, the reservoir covers an area of 46 ha (113 acres). Water once flowed through a tunnel on the west side of the loch, which enters the High Creoch Burn. Constructed in the late 18th C., this system once served as a lade to power cotton mills in Gatehouse of Fleet. Today the reservoir is operated by Scottish Water for the supply of drinking-water, which is now abstracted through a treatment works located to the east. The loch supports a recreational trout fishery and is the source of the Glengap Burn which exits to the east.
