Berriedale Wood

A small woodland in the north of the island of Hoy in Orkney, Berriedale Wood is considered to be the northernmost (semi) natural woodland in the British Isles, thought to have been undisturbed from grazing, burning and felling for about fifty years. Bisected by the Burn of Berriedale and located a mile (1.5 km) north of Rackwick, the woodland is composed of downy birch (Betula pubescens), with aspen (Populus tremula), hazel (Corylus avellana), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and willow (Salix spp), with an understorey of heather, roses, honeysuckle, ferns and blaeberry.
