Creag Meagaidh

A substantial mountain rising to a height of 1128m (3703 feet) to the north of Loch Moy on the border between the Lochaber and Badenoch districts of Highland Council Area. Classified as a Munro, Creag Meagaidh derives its name from the Gaelic for 'bog land rock'. Creag Meagaidh was first designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1964, as a National Nature Reserve in 1986 and as a Special Area of Conservation in 2005, primarily owing to its population of breeding Dotterel. The initial designation was geological, but a much larger area of almost 7000 ha (17,297 acres) was designated for its botanical interest in 1974. Since 1985, the Creag Meagaidh Estate has been owned by the Scottish Government and run by its environmental agency NatureScot, which manages the native pinewood on the slopes of the mountain with the aim of encouraging natural regeneration.
