Loch Shin

A reservoir which extends northwestwards for 17 miles (27 km) from Lairg in NW Highland, Loch Shin is the largest loch in the old county of Sutherland. It varies between a half-mile (1 km) and 1½ miles (2.5 km) in width and has a maximum depth of 49m (162 feet). It is the main storage reservoir for the Shin Hydro-Electric Power Scheme, the most northerly in the United Kingdom. The loch gave its name to the Royal Navy frigate HMS Loch Shin launched in 1944.
