Doon Hill

A well-defined drumlin in The Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, Doon Hill rises to 84m (275 feet) at Boreland, a mile (1.6 km) northwest of Spittal and 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Kirkcowan. This is part of an extensive drumlin field, with a prominent tail and its principal axis aligned NNE-SSW indicating the direction of ice flow within an ancient glacier. There are the scant remains of an Iron-Age hill-fort on its summit, which once included two concentric earthwork ramparts that have been almost completely destroyed by ploughing. Boreland Fell lies to the north but, confusingly, there is another Doon Hill 3½ miles (5.5 km) to the north northwest.
