Eilein, Loch an

A picturesque small loch in the Rothiemurchus Forest, Badenoch, Loch an Eilein lies 3 miles (5 km) south of Aviemore. There is a visitor centre with exhibitions on the management of native Scots pine and on a small island stand the remains of a 15th-century castle, said to have been a property of Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch (1343 - 1405). The level of the loch was raised in the 1770s to allow timber to be floated down to the Spey.

Voted one of the best picnic spots in Scotland, the loch features on Sir Thomas Dick Lauder's romance Lochandhu. Ospreys can regularly be seen fishing here.
