Sweetheart Abbey

Located 5 miles (8 km) south of Dumfries, Sweetheart Abbey is a late 13th and early 14th Century Cistercian abbey founded by Devorguilla, Lady of Galloway. The foundation was established in memory of her husband John Balliol, the father of King John Balliol. Devorguilla is buried in the presbytery with a silver and ivory casket containing her husband's embalmed heart, which she had treasured during her life, hence the name 'sweet heart'.
