Loch Tummel

A linear loch and reservoir in highland Perth and Kinross Council Area, Loch Tummel lies on the River Tummel in the heart of the Tay Forest Park 4 miles (6.5 km) northwest of Pitlochry. It is overlooked from the north by the Queen's View and stretches 7 miles (11 km) from west to east. The loch lies at 143m (470 feet) above sea level. It is retained by the Clunie Dam at its eastern end which, when built as part of the Tummel Hydro-Electric Power Scheme in 1951, raised the level of the loch by 5m (17 feet) and more than doubled its original length. It now contains 36,400,000 cu. m (8,000 million gallons) of water. The promontory of An Dun is now marooned as a wooded islet in the middle of the loch. A smaller islet lies to the east, with a low-lying island at the far western end of the loch occupying former agricultural land, once part of Dalcroy Farm.
