A stream of S Edinburgh, the Bavelaw Burn rises in headstreams on the northern slopes of the Pentland Hills 5½ miles (9 km) west of Penicuik. It flows northeast through Threipmuir and Harlaw Reservoirs before turning northwest and passing through Malleny Mills to join the Water of Leith at Balerno, having completed a course of 6 miles (10 km).
