Also known as the Averon, the Alness River has its source in Loch Morie in Easter Ross, Highland Council Area. It flows east for 3 miles (5 km) to a point where it receives the Black Water from Strath Rusdale and then southeast for a further 8 miles (13 km) passing through Alness before entering the Cromarty Firth at Alness Point.
