The smallest of a group of interconnected lochs in the Machars of SW Dumfries and Galloway, Loch Hempton is located between Black Loch and Fell Loch, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of the Old Place of Mochrum. It extends to 1.2 ha (3 acres) and contains a little islet named Fern Island.
