A significant river of NE Scotland, the Helmsdale has its source in the combined lochs of Rimsdale, nan Clar and Badanloch, which together act as a compensation reservoir maintaining a flow to sustain its noted salmon fishery. The River Helmsdale (or Helmsdale River) flows east southeast, passing through Loch Achnamoine, it then receives the Bannock Burn a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Kinbrace in E Sutherland. The river now turns southeast through the Strath of Kildonan to spill into the sea at Helmsdale, having completed a course of 21 miles (34 km).
