Rising as headstreams on the southern slopes of Mendick Hill in the W of the Scottish Borders, the Tarth Water flows south to a point 1¼ miles (2 km) northeast of Dolphinton, where it forms the border with South Lanarkshire for a mile (1.5 km). It then turns east to Blyth Bridge and southeast to join the Lyne Water a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southeast of Drochil Castle, having completed a course of 7 miles (11 km).
