A river rising in Loch Doon on the border between East Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway, the River Doon flows north through the Ness Glen and into Bogton Loch before continuing north and west. It passes through the settlements of Patna and Skeldon before finally entering Ayr Bay at a point a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Alloway.
