Denmylne Castle

A mile (2 km) to the southeast of Newburgh in north Fife and opposite the entrance to a large quarry stand the ruins of Denmylne Castle, built by Sir Alexander Balfour in the 15th Century on the site of an early fortress of the Earls of Fife. One of that family was Sir James Balfour of Kinnaird, Lord Lyon King of Arms and a noted collector of manuscripts. The castle was abandoned in 1772 when the estate was sold.
