Rising on the southern slopes of North Mains Hill, one of the Riccarton Hills in West Lothian, Mains Burn flows south to North Mains and then turns east for 1¼ miles (2 km) before turning north to Ochiltree and east again, becoming the Ecclesmachan Burn and eventually the Niddry Burn. The Mains Burn 2¾ miles (4.5 km) in length, while another of the same name rises 1½ miles (2.5 km) west northwest of the source of this.
