Overview of McLellan Galleries, The

Located on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, the McLellan Galleries were built by Archibald McLellan in 1856, to a design by James Smith (1808-63), and comprised a frontage of shops with exhibition areas behind. The City Corporation bought the building and contents later that year following his death in order to pay off his creditors, and used it as a venue for exhibitions. A fire in the 1980s resulted in the building being renovated and refurbished and it was re-opened for the city's celebrations as City of Culture in 1990. It is one of the principal venues in Glasgow for international travelling exhibitions.
