Rothesay Castle

Rothesay Castle sits in the centre of Rothesay, Argyll and Bute and was built in a circular design in the 13th Century by the Stewart kings, although it is claimed that a castle has been here since 1098. It has had a turbulent history, captured in 1230 by Viking invaders, the scene of the death of King Robert III in 1406 and destruction during the Argyll Rebellion in 1685. In the second half of the 19th century restoration work began under the patronage of the 3rd Marquess of Bute, culminating in the castle being handed over to Historic Scotland in 1961. The castle is one of the few in Scotland surrounded by a moat.
