Foss Mine

Opened in the late 1970s, the Foss Mine extracts the mineral Barytes, which is valued because of its great density as a component of the lubricating 'mud' used in the oil production industry. The 'mud' is pumped down at the well-head and its weight counters the pressure of the upwelling oil. The mine lies 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Aberfeldy, to the south of Loch Tummel, on the slopes of Meall Tairneachan, a corbett which rises to 787m (2582 feet).
