Strome Castle

A 15th Century fortified tower-house, built on a strategic promontory on Loch Carron in such a position to effectively control the water-borne traffic. It was built originally by the Earls of Ross, but given to the Camerons of Lochiel, confirmed by a Royal Charter (1495) signed by King James IV (1473 - 1513). King James VI (1566 - 1625) gave the castle to the MacDonalds of Glengarry as part of his process of subjugating the Highland clans. The castle was successfully besieged by the MacKenzies of Kintail in 1602 and destroyed to prevent its future use against them. The ruin was obtained by the National Trust for Scotland in 1939.
