Loch Indaal is a large sea loch that extends inland from the northwest for The Oa, and lying to the east of the Rhinns of Islay, on the island of Islay, Argyll and Bute. It is around 12 miles (20 km) in length and 8 mile (13 km) wide at its entrance, narrowing to 1½ miles (2 km) between Port Charlotte and Saltpan Point, before the inner loch widens once again. Almost splitting the island in half, it is only separated from the southern end of Loch Gruinart by a 2 mile (4 km) stretch of low-lying land, which was flooded for a time following the last ice age. The main settlements around the shores of the loch are Bridgend, Bowmore, Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte, while the long Laggan Bay forms much of its eastern shore.
