Dunvegan, Loch

A substantial sealoch on the northwest coast of the island of Skye in the Inner Hebrides, Loch Dunvegan opens into the Little Minch 19 miles (30.5 km) west northwest of Portree. The loch is 6 miles (10 km) in length, and reaches 2¼ miles (3.5 km) in width at its mouth.

Dunvegan Castle lies on its eastern shore, sheltered by the island of Gairbh Eilein. In addition, several other small rocky islands and islets lie within the loch; namely Eilean Dubh, Eilean Mor, Eilean Dubh Beag, Eilean Grianal, Eilean Glas and Lampay, with the further islands of Isay, Mingay and Clett at its mouth. The small crofting townships of Galtrigill, Boreraig, Totaig, Colbost, Uig, Dunvegan and Claigan all lie around its shores.

Loch Dunvegan gave its name to a Royal Navy frigate, launched in 1944 and decommissioned in 1960.
