Deer Sound

A substantial inlet on the east coast of the Orkney Mainland, Deer Sound lies 6 miles (10 km) east southeast of Kirkwall. Opening to the northeast between Rerwick Head and Mull Head, the sound contains several smaller inlets. But for a sand tombolo at the southern end of one of these inlets, St. Peter's Pool, the district of Deerness would be isolated from the rest of the mainland.
