Loch Seaforth

(Loch Shiphoirt)

A sea loch on the east coast of North Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Loch Seaforth (Gael: Loch Shiphoirt) opens out into the Sound of Shiant. Seaforth Island, with an area of 273 ha (675 acres), rises sheer out of the loch to 217m (712 feet). The loch gives its name to an extinct branch of the Clan Mackenzie, founders of the Earldom of Seaforth, and a regiment, the Seaforth Highlanders, which was created in 1881 on the amalgamation of the 72nd and 78th Highlanders, the 78th having been founded in 1778 by the Earl of Seaforth.
