Myres Castle

Situated to the south of the village of Auchtermuchty in NW Fife, Myres Castle was built as a Z-plan fortress in 1530 and has had many alterations and additions since. Originally part of the estates of the Earls of Fife, Myres was owned by many families over the years, although became the home of the Hereditary Sergeant at Arms to the Monarch at Falkland Palace. More recently, when the Falkland Estates were acquired by John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847 - 1900), he sold Myres to his friend James Ogilvy Fairlie. Sold by the Fairlies in 1997, it is now run as a country house hotel.
