Culag Hotel

Located close to the harbour in Lochinver in the Assynt district of Highland Council Area, the Culag Hotel was built in 1873 as a shooting lodge for George Leveson-Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland (1828-92), on the site of the former Lochinver House, a property of Macdonald of Lochinver. It was converted to a hotel in 1880. The building takes the form of a heavy baronial mansion which was restored after a fire in 1939 but later badly extended. A two-storey southwestern wing was renovated as an office complex in 2002 and occupied by Highland Council, providing a headquarters for their harbours department together with a local service point. Lochinver is the busiest of the Council's 102 harbours and jetties, accounting for half of the £12 million annual income.
