Langwell

A shooting lodge and estate located to the west of Berriedale in the Caithness district of Highland Council Area, Langwell has been the property of the Dukes of Portland since 1858. It was previously owned by Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster (1754 - 1835) from 1788 and then James Horne from 1813, both of whom made significant improvements to the estate greatly increasing its value. Today, with the adjacent Braemore Estate, the property extends to 18545 ha (45828 acres). Langwell Lodge dates from the 18th-century and was extended after the estate was acquired by the 5th Duke of Portland, although he is said to have never lived here. Its walled garden has been restored and is occasionally open to the public during the summer months. The Langwell Water rises in the Langwell Forest and flows east through the estate to the North Sea coast at Berriedale.
