Firth Ness

A headland between Firths Voe and Swinister Voe on the northeast coast of the Mainland of Shetland, Firth Ness looks out onto the island of Linga and Lunna Sound. The Ninian pipeline bringing oil from the North Sea to the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal makes its second landfall here, having initially landed at Grut Wick, then crossing Lunna Sound from Cul Ness. The pipeline was completed in 1976 and this section was pulled into a prepared trench by two land-based winches located at Firth Ness. From here it proceeds west, in parallel with the Brent pipeline, to Sullom Voe.
