Cairn Hill

A little whaleback in The Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, Cairn Hill rises to just 32m (104 feet) a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northwest of Garlieston. This is part of an extensive drumlin field, with a well-defined tail and its principal axis aligned NNW-SSE indicating the direction of flow of an ice sheet which once covered this area. Much of the hill is cloaked in woodland. Confusingly, there are two other Cairn Hills nearby; the nearest being 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the west southwest, 4½ miles (7 km) to the west southwest and 5½ miles (8.8 km) to the southwest, with another on the opposite side of Wigtown Bay, 7½ miles (12 km) to the east.
