Heaval


(Heabhal, Sheabhal)

A mountain of S Central Barra in the Western Isles, Heaval (Gael: Heabhal or Sheabhal) lies a mile (1.5 km) northeast of the settlement of Castlebay and rises to a height of 383m (1259 feet). Its summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar, installed in 1950. On its southeastern slopes is a white marble statue of the Madonna and Child, known as Our Lady of the Sea, erected in 1954.
