A headland of the Orkney Mainland, Mull Head lies on the island's east coast to the east of Deer Sound and 8 miles (13 km) east of Kirkwall. The headland is surrounded by cliffs which rise to 45m (148 feet) above the sea. Noted for its seabirds, Orkney voles and unimproved heathland, the area around Mull Head is designated as a local nature reserve. Seals and porpoises can be regularly seen offshore. An Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar was installed 1948-49 at a height of 48m (157 feet) just behind the cliff edge.
