Hoxa Head

A headland which form the termination of a hook-shaped peninsula at the northwest of the island of South Ronaldsay in Orkney, Hoxa Head lies 2¾ miles (4.5 km) west of St Margaret's Hope. The township of Uppertown occupies the peninsula. Hoxa Head Lighthouse, located at Scarf Skerry immediately to the north, was established in 1901. Substantial gun emplacements and look-out towers were built here in 1915 and upgraded in 1939, part of the Scapa Flow defences, and a boom across the Sound of Hoxa terminated here.
