Rova Head

A headland on the east coast of Shetland, at the northern end of the Bressay Sound, Rova Head is situated 2½ miles (4 km) north of Lerwick. It is rectangular in shape, with two distinct terminations; Wester Rova Head and Easter Rova Head. Rova Head is an industrial site and represents the northernmost extent of Lerwick Harbour. Shetland Islands Council ran a landfill site here which is now closed. There was also operated a waste incinerator between 1981 and 1996, when EU environmental legislation meant that the emissions produced were no longer acceptable. The incinerator replaced by a new Energy Recovery Plant just to the south at Green Head.

Scottish and Southern Energy have planning permission for three wind turbines, each rated at 2.3 MW, to be located at Rova Head. These will become operational in 2013 and provide peak-load power for the Lerwick District Heating System, in addition to augmenting Shetland's over-stretched electricity supply.

Lerwick's sewage treatment works lies just inland, with its outflow at Rova Head.
