Torrs Warren

An extensive complex of massive sand dunes lying behind the Sands of Luce in Galloway, Torrs Warren is situated a mile (1.5 km) south of Dunragit, beyond the Piltanton Burn. This is the largest sand dune system in Southern Scotland. Along with Luce Bay and Sands, this area was designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2005. The dunes system includes mobile sand, flower-rich grassland, heathland and a small area of saltmarsh. A wide range of plant species are found here including abundant Lesser Twayblade orchid (Neottia cordata). Hollows among the dunes, known as dune slacks, and a series of freshwater pools provide a haven for amphibians including the great crested newt. Behind is a plantation forest.
