Castle Fraser

Described as the most elaborate Z-plan castle in Scotland, Castle Fraser lies near Sauchen in Aberdeenshire, 16 miles (26 km) west of Aberdeen. Begun in 1575 by Michael Fraser and incorporating an earlier fortalice, it was not completed until 1636. The castle was given into the care of the National Trust for Scotland in 1976 and a formal garden was recreated in the old walled garden.
