Aird's Moss
(Airds Moss)

One of the best areas of blanket bog in the United Kingdom, Aird's Moss in the Muirkirk Uplands of East Ayrshire to the north of Cumnock. It extends northwards to the River Ayr and comprises a mantle of peat characterised by bog-moss and other wetland species. The area has been extensively mined. The Battle of Aird's Moss was a small conflagration involving the Covenanters in 1680.
